A familiar restaurant name in Mesa is coming to Mesa Riverview. A groundbreaking ceremony will take place Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 9 a.m. for Matta’s Grill and Cantina in the entertainment district of Mesa Riverview, across from Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill.
“Matta’s has been a tradition in Mesa for more than half a century offering great food and customer service. It is great that the Matta family is expanding to Mesa Riverview. The restaurant will be a wonderful addition to northwest Mesa,” District 1 Councilmember Dave Richins said.
Riverview is a prominent economic/revenue generating area for Mesa, drawing people not only from the City, but from surrounding communities. “Matta's Restaurant opening in the entertainment district of Riverview is an asset to the district as a whole, adding to the Quality of Life in Mesa. Matta's has a long history in Mesa and is a destination restaurant,” Mesa’s Assistant Economic Development Director Shelly Allen said.
The Matta family operates Matta’s Mexican Grill at Brown and Higley and operated Matta’s Restaurant on Main Street from 1953 to 2008. Peter and Gretchen Matta will open Matta’s Grill and Cantina, a 5,000 square foot restaurant, offering lunch, dinner and curbside take-out at Mesa Riverview. “There are four generations of Mattas involved with our restaurant who have served six generations of customers,” Matta’s co-owner David Matta said. Matta owns the current Matta’s Mexican Grill restaurant with his sons and their wives: Peter and Gretchen and Chris and Susan. His 87 year old mother, Mary Lou Matta, continues to participate with the business decisions. Peter and Gretchen have three boys and will be the 4th generation working at Matta’s Restaurant. Chris and Susan’s oldest son is also fourth generation, working at Matta’s Mexican Grill.
Matta’s Grill and Cantina at Mesa Riverview is scheduled to open in February.
