Carbon Monoxide Safety

Is your family safe from carbon monoxide poisoning?

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, toxic gas that is produced when fuel burning appliances are not operating properly, not operated properly, or are not properly ventilated.

Symptoms of CO poisoning

  • Tired

  • Headaches

  • Nausea

  • Dizziness

  • Drowsiness

  • Blurred Vision

**The initial symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to the flu (but without fever).  These symptoms typically affect every one in a a household where CO is present.   If you experience  any of these symptoms and if you feel better when you go outside your home and symptoms reappear once you're back inside, you may have CO poisoning.

Home Safety Tips

  • Carbon Monoxide detectors are not required but are recommended.
  • Follow manufacturers instructions for the proper care and use of appliances.
  • Have appliances inspected and repaired by qualified repair persons.   More home safety tips.

Unlike carbon monoxide, utility system natural gas has an odorant which is added to it to provide a distinctive and immediately recognizable smell.  The odorant provides a “rotten egg” smell to assist you in detecting even the smallest of leaks.  If you have a diminished sense of smell, audible alarms are available which sound in the event of that natural gas is detected.  More information
