It's hoops time!  Join us for Youth Sports' exciting youth basketball programs this winter.

 

Clinic Information (Kindergarten only)


Participants will get a chance to learn the rules and develop the fundamentals through skill work and drills as well as play as a team during scrimmages each week. This clinic is the perfect place for kids to start learning the sport while having fun! All skill levels and abilities are welcome and encouraged!  Closed toe athletic shoes are required.

League Information (Grades 1-6)

Participants will both practice and play a game each week where they can learn the rules, develop their skills and play as a team. There are three grade divisions: 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th, and 5th-6th. All levels focus on player development, having fun, and sportsmanship. This is an equal play league. All skill levels and abilities welcome and encouraged!  Participants will receive a team t-shirt. Closed toe athletic shoes are required. Sign up as an individual or bring in a whole team!

Game times are between 10 am – 4 pm (game times are subject to change)

Game Schedule:
  • 6 weeks of games followed by a single elimination tournament on March 23.
  • Participants will be notified of their team, coach, practice time and location, and game schedule via email on Thursday, January 24 at 5 PM. Participants will also be contacted by their coach by this time as well.
  • Game schedules will be posted online below on Thursday, January 24 at 5 PM.

Fee:

$35 for residents, $42 for non-residents (Kindergarten)

$50 for residents, $60 for non-residents (Grades 1-6)

Fee assistance is available for eligible Mesa residents

Registration begins Monday, December 3 at 8 AM

Registration deadline is Wednesday, January 16 at 5 PM

No refunds after Wednesday, January 16 at 5 PM, $5 non-refundable fee for cancellations

Uniform:
  • Participants will receive a team shirt at their first game. This shirt must be worn to each game. 
  • Participants are required to wear closed-toe athletic shoes.
  • Participants should wear athletic shorts or pants which allow for more comfort while playing.
  • No jewelry.

 

Team Formation:
  • Teams will be assembled by proximity of residence unless otherwise requested.
  • Teams will consist of approximately 10 players.
  • Teammate and coach requests should be included upon registration or by contacting Lacy at time of registration. Please know we will try our best to accommodate, but unfortunately cannot guarantee any requests.

 

Practices:
  • Practice time and location will be determined by the volunteer coach.
  • Practices may begin as soon as the week of January 28 for finalized rosters with approved coaches.
  • Teams practice 1-2 times a week. Participants are only required to attend one, though.

 

Divisions:

Co-ed, Grades 1st - 2nd

  • Four 8 minute quarters with a five minute halftime
  • 27.5 inch, size 5 ball
  • 8 foot hoop height
  • Plays 5 on 5
  • Will not keep score

 

Co-ed, Grades 3rd - 4th 

  • Four 8 minute quarters with a five minute halftime
  • 28.5 inch, size 6 ball
  • 10 foot hoop height
  • Plays 5 on 5
  • Will keep score

 

Co-ed, Grades 5th - 6th

  • Four 8 minute quarters with a five minute halftime
  • 28.5 inch, size 6 ball
  • 10 foot hoop height
  • Plays 5 on 5
  • Will keep score

Score Keeping and Standings:
  • It is important to know that this league is about having fun and developing in the sport, not what the score is or wins vs. loses. With that being said, we do feel there is an age when it is appropriate to begin keeping score.
    • 1st - 2nd grade division will not keep score
    • 3rd - 4th and 5th - 6th grade divisions will keep score
  • We will not be tracking standings.
  • We ask that all participants, coaches, parents/guardians and spectators concentrate on the fundamentals and love of the game rather than the score.

  • All participants should plan on being at this game in order to be part of the picture.
  • Purchasing pictures is optional. It is purely a benefit of our league.
  • Coaches will pass out picture packet information at the first game.

Tournament bracket will be posted online below on Wednesday, March 13 at 5 PM. The bracket will be emailed out at this time to coaches and participants. Coaches will also contact players by Friday, March 15 at 5 PM with this information.

Parent/Guardian Information:
  • Optional Parent Meeting
    •  Monday January 28 from 6:15p-7:30p at the Main Library branch, Saguaro Room.
    • Staff will discuss game logistics, rules, expectations, and answer any questions. We encourage everyone to attend in order to help prepare for the league in advance.
  • Parents/guardians will receive a handbook via email on Thursday, January 24. The handbook can also be viewed on this webpage anytime. Please familiarize yourself with the league in advance and discuss the information with your child to help them prepare as well.
  • Parents/guardians are asked to read and abide by the Spectator Code of Conduct. You will receive a copy of this via email on Thursday, January 24 and a hard copy from your coach at the first game. It can also be viewed on this webpage anytime.
  • Parents/guardians are asked to review the Participant Code of Conduct and Guidelines with their child before the first game. You will receive a copy of this via email on Thursday, January 24 and a hard copy from your coach at the first game. It can also be viewed on this webpage anytime.
  • Participants should bring a bottle of water with their name on it to keep hydrated at practices and games. Water fountains and/or jugs will be available as well at games.

Our basketball league depends on the kindness of volunteers to coach our teams. Youth Sports believes getting parents/guardians and community members involved with our league really adds to the quality of our program and its overall success. Requirements

  • Must be 18 years old and older
  • Volunteer application
  • Background check, fingerprinting, and ID badge completed prior to first practice
  • Mandatory Coaches’ Meeting
    • Monday, January 21 from 7-9 pm at our main office (200 South Center, Building 1, Mesa, AZ 85210)
  • Optional Coaches’ Training Clinic
    • Saturday, January 26 from 9-11 am, at Webster Recreation Center (202 N. Sycamore Mesa, 85210).
  • National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA) certification
    • Will be provided at the Mandatory Coaches’ Meeting on January 22
  • Sign and abide by the Coaches Code of Ethics

  • Online concussion training through the CDC
  • Equipment for use during the season including age appropriate basketballs, jersey pinnies, and cones
  • First Aid kit
  • Adding an assistant coach to help with the team (must be cleared by Lacy)
