Certified Autism Center (CAC)

We have partnered with The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), a global leader in online training and certification programs, to become the first Parks & Recreation agency in the world to be designated as a Certified Autism Center (CAC). It is our goal to provide every family with an enjoyable and memorable experience while in our facilities or programs, and we are proud to offer specialized services to individuals with autism and other special needs.

Certified Staff

Our employees receive specialized training to ensure they have the requisite knowledge, skills, temperament, and expertise to cater to all children, including those with special needs. Training focuses include: sensory awareness, motor skills, autism overview, program development, social skills, communication, environment, and emotional awareness.

IBCCES Sensory Guide TM

The IBCCES Sensory Guide provides insight on how a child with sensory processing issues may be affected by each sense for attractions managed by our department. IBCCES performed an audit on six locations including Dobson Ranch Park, Pioneer Park, Riverview Park, Red Mountain Center, Skyline Aquatic Center, and Mesa Convention Center.

Sensory Bins

Sensory bins are available at our programs and facilities. The bins include a sampling of fidget toys, communication tools, and noise-cancelling headphones. These items can be requested at the main desk of the recreation centers and aquatic facilities. Additional modifications include low sensory areas or quiet rooms at some of our venues. Patrons are encouraged to discuss the sensory needs of program participants or guests at our facilities so that we can make a reasonable modification.
