Hyrum Smith Peterson
Town Marshal
End of Watch: November 12, 1913
Peterson

Marshal Hyram Peterson was shot and killed by a theft suspect while on duty on November 12, 1913. He observed two men attempting to steal a bicycle and gave chase on his own bicycle. He was shot by the two men when he caught them at the edge of town. Both men were eventually apprehended.

Marshal Peterson was 53 years old and had been the town marshal for five years. He was survived by his wife and children. He is buried in the City of Mesa Cemetery.

Steven Paul Pollard
Officer
End of Watch: November 27, 1994
Pollard

Officer Pollard was killed on November 27, 1994 when he was struck by a vehicle after pulling over a suspected drunk driver on US 60. During the encounter, Officer Pollard had a motor officer respond to conduct an in depth DUI investigation of the driver. While the investigation was taking place, Officer Pollard returned to the drivers side door area of his patrol vehicle where he was struck and killed by a passing motorist.

The motorist who struck him failed to stop at the scene, but was located a short distance away by another officer. Later, during the trial, the motorist claimed to have dozed off while driving and was unaware of what exactly he had struck.

Officer Pollard served with the Mesa Police Department for 1-1/2 years and is survived by his wife and daughter.

Brandon Mendoza
Sergeant
End of Watch: May 12, 2014
Mendoza
Sergeant Brandon Mendoza was killed on his way home from work on May 12, 2014, when his car was hit head-on on the freeway by a driver going the wrong way. There were many calls to 911 regarding this wrong-way driver who traveled 30+ miles and four freeways. The driver was killed instantly; Sergeant Mendoza was rushed to hospital where he died a few hours later.

Sergeant Mendoza began his association with the Mesa Police Department as one of our police Explorers. He then became an Animal Control Officer before entering the academy and becoming a police officer of 13 years. Prior to his death, he had recently completed and passed his sergeants exam. The promotion was done posthumously the evening before his funeral service.

Sgt. Mendoza is survived by his family -- parents, two brothers and a sister and their families, grandparents, nieces & nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
