Travel Time Studies

What is a travel time study?
A travel time study allows the Traffic Engineering Staff to
compare current traffic conditions to those in the past,
identify congested areas and make adjustments to traffic signal
timings as necessary, and to identify congested areas, which
provides decision makers with information that can be used to
decide how to spend money intended for roadway improvements.
Why are travel time studies conducted?
In the Fall of 2006, the City of Mesa began performing
semi-annual travel time studies on arterial streets throughout
Mesa. The studies are being done as part of a performance
measure for Traffic Engineering. The specific goal is to keep
the rate of travel time increases below the growth rate of
traffic volumes.
