- Timing is Everything
Change your irrigation timer with the seasons because plants need twice as much water in summer as they do in the winter. In December and January, dormant bermudagrass only needs water once a month (if you don’t overseed with winter rye). If you’re not changing your timer, you’re wasting water. - Landscapes That Thrive? What's Not to Love?
Xeriscape (zeer-a-scape) takes a creative approach to landscaping with water in mind. It includes the use of low-water-use plants, efficient drip irrigation, proper maintenance and more to produce superior landscapes. Convert your grass and cut your water use in half. You just might earn up to $1,100 to do so by participating in our Grass-to-Xeriscape incentive. And, find the best plants!
- Don't Water the Gutter
Misdirected or broken sprinklers or runoff from excessive watering can be seen across neighborhoods. Position your sprinklers so water lands on the lawn, not paved areas. Frequently check for broken sprinkler heads as they can lose 12 gallons per minute or more. Learn about cycle and soak.
- Figure Out Where All That Water is Going
If you have a higher-than-normal water bill and you don’t know why, it might be time for some for some detective work around the house. Do you have leaks? Is your irrigation controller set properly? We’ve got booklets and online guides to take you through the steps – get the kids involved. Find and fix leaks.
- Get Free Water When You Can
Rainwater harvesting captures, contains, and distributes rainwater on your property for use by plants. Rain is a free, salt-free source of water that contains many beneficial ingredients for your plants. Up to 500 gallons can be collected off your rooftop with just one-half inch of rain. Learn more about free water.
- Time to Catch Your Running Toilet
About 20 percent of toilets leak! That’s one out of every five. But toilet leaks are often silent so you might not even know that you have one. The rubber flapper is often the culprit. Put some food coloring in the tank and see if it bleeds through to the bowl. If it does, get that flapper out of there. Check for toilet leaks.
