Mayor's Youth Committee

The Mayor's Youth Committee is a select group of juniors and seniors from high schools throughout Mesa. Each year, school principals and counselors choose students through a competitive process to represent their school on the committee.

MYC is a year-long program where students interact with the Mayor, City Council and City staff on a regular basis to learn the ins and outs of city government. MYC members attend monthly meetings, participate in community service opportunities and events, tour city departments and projects, and research current city issues. MYC members complete the Mayor's Assignment, a capstone project designed to encourage youth engagement in civic processes.

Students who successfully complete the requirements of the MYC program participate in a special graduation ceremony in the spring with the Mayor and their friends and family in attendance.

Requirements

I Understand:

  1. To be eligible for MYC, youth must live in Mesa or attend a school in Mesa and be in 11th or 12th grade.
  2. Each member must make a minimum nine-month commitment to the program from August through April.
  3. MYC typically meets 1-2 times per month on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
  4. The majority of MYC communication will be through the “Group Me” app. I agree to download the app and engage with the other participants to the best of my ability.
  5. Attendance is taken at each meeting and a designated number of points is needed to graduate. If I have multiple absences and/or do not actively participate in the program, I may be removed from the Mayor’s Youth Committee.
  6. MYC is a leadership program designed to help me learn beneficial skills. One of those important skills is responsibility. I agree to be personally accountable for my MYC commitments and not rely on my parents to communicate on my behalf.
  7. I must fully participate in the Mayor’s assignment presentation in order to graduate from MYC.
