Ambulance Service

Ambulance M2213 An ambulance crew is dispatched with a fire crew to emergency medical calls when transport to hospital may be needed. This model ensures that patients receive both immediate on-scene medical care, and rapid transport to local hospitals where emergency care can continue.

In the past, Mesa provided ambulance service exclusively though contracted ambulance companies. Beginning in 2018, MFMD was granted authority by the state to begin providing our own ambulance service. Our Emergency Transport Services Division started with a single unit to support high-demand times to better serve our patients. Our program has since expanded to cover our entire city, guided by data-informed decisions about where and when units are needed. Today, ambulance service in Mesa is provided as a combination of our own units and AMR ambulances, with the closest available unit dispatched for medical emergencies.

Patient Billing for Ambulance Service

MFMD does not charge for emergency response. There is, however, a charge for emergency transportation to the hospital.

Service fees for ambulance service (shown below) are set by the Arizona Department of Health Services (AzDHS). MFMD uses the service fees to support our ambulance service with a long-term goal of becoming self-sustaining through those revenues.

FAQs

Why am I receiving a bill? Don't taxes pay for this?

While MFMD does not charge for emergency response, we do charge for emergency transportation to the hospital. The service fees we charge are set by the Arizona Department of Health Services (AzDHS) and are the same as those for the private ambulance company.

Billing Questions

How is my bill calculated?

Fees are based on services rendered and are dictated by the procedures indicated on the patient’s chart. Fees will closely follow billing regulations and are coded as such:

  • ALS (advanced life support) – serious or life-threatening illness or injury that requires a paramedic.
  • BLS (basic life support) - illness or injury that is NOT life threatening but requires prompt attention that can be handled by an EMT.
  • Mileage - transport from the scene to a hospital. The mileage is charged down to the tenth of a mile.
