What are the minimum qualifications to apply?

  • 18 years old by the application opening date
  • High School Diploma or GED by the application opening date
  • Successful CPAT post July 1, 2024

After applying, are there any additional requirements later in the process?

Yes, to accept a conditional offer:

  •  Current Arizona EMT or National Registry certification at time of job offer and must remain current there after*

 * While an EMT certification is required for hire as a Firefighter Recruit, MFMD is now pleased to offer successful Firefighter Recruit candidates new opportunities to be selected to join the Department as Fire Pre-Recruits if they have not yet completed their EMT certification. Highly qualified candidates without an EMT certification may be offered a Pre-Recruit position where they can attend an MFMD-sponsored EMT course. Upon successful performance as a Pre-Recruit and passing the EMT certification within a specified time period, Pre-Recruits can promote to the Firefighter Recruit position in the next Academy. Do I need a Firefighter 1 & 2 Certification to test for Firefighter Recruit?

You do not need a Firefighter 1 & 2 Certification to apply for Firefighter Recruit. Those that are selected through our testing process will receive their AZ state Firefighter 1 & 2 Certification in the fire academy.

Is there an age restriction to become a firefighter?

There is no maximum age. The only age restriction is being 18 years old as of the application opening date.

 

Do I have to take a CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) to get hired?

Yes. Successful completion of the CPAT with a licensed CPAT agency is required. Qualifying dates for a valid CPAT vary by application/testing period but are generally within 6 months of a current testing process. Each testing period will include specific CPAT requirements. Can I test if I do not have an Arizona driver's license?

Yes, however, if selected you must possess a valid Arizona driver's license by hire date. Visit the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division website at http://www.azdot.gov/mvd/ to learn about how to secure an Arizona driver's license.

Do you accept applications from out of state applicants?

Yes. You are not required to live in the state to apply, test or work as a firefighter. All travel expenses will be the candidate's responsibility. 

How do I transfer my EMT from another state?

You will need a current National Registry EMT if you want to transfer your out of state EMT to Arizona. For more information on transferring your National Registry EMT to Arizona contact A.Z.D.H.S. Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma 602-364-3150 or 800-200-8523.

How do I get my Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification?

There are a few ways to obtain your EMT Certification. First, you can take a semester class at a community college. You can also take an EMT class at a trade school. There are many trade schools in the Phoenix Metro Area that offer EMT Certification. The best way to find them is to search EMT Certification programs on the internet. Some of the trade schools offer accelerated programs which allow you to obtain your EMT Certification in as little as 14 days.

Do I have to be an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to apply?

Do you get paid to attend the fire academy as a Firefighter Recruit?

Yes, you are paid to attend the fire academy. Currently, Firefighter Recruit pay is $54,927.34 annually.

How often do firefighters work?

Most firefighters work a 24-hour schedule split between three shifts (A-B-C shift). On average, firefighters work 10 days per month.  We also have a 12-hour schedule split between 2 shifts (E and F shift). These individuals work 7am to 7pm for three consecutive days followed by three days off. They typically work 15 days per month

Can I transfer my time if I already work as a firefighter in another state?

MFMD is part of the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System of Arizona. If you worked at a participating AZ fire department, your time may be eligible for transfer. It is recommended that you contact PSPRS at 602-255-5575 for more detailed information. If you worked out of state as a firefighter, your time does not transfer, however you may be eligible to purchase service credit through the Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS).

Where do I obtain a CPAT?

The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) can be obtained from any CPAT licensee. Make sure the organization you take the CPAT through can provide you with proof of successful completion. You can get a CPAT in Arizona at certain Maricopa Community Colleges and the National Testing Network. Please see Mesa Community College for additional information. What is the testing process to become a Mesa Firefighter?

Step 1 - Online Application
Step 2 - Virtual Online Written Exam
Step 3 - Mandatory In-person Intern Orientation
Step 4 - In-person Selection Interview, for the most qualified candidates

Following the testing process, job offers are extended to the most qualified candidates who will then need to successfully complete the prehire process. The prehire process includes:

  • Medical evaluation
  • Psychological evaluation
  • Background check
  • Drug screening  

How often does MFMD test for Firefighter Recruit?

Testing frequency varies - we may test more or less often depending on department needs. Candidates are encouraged to prepare and apply as soon as they are ready since we cannot guarantee how long it will be before the next recruitment opens. Once the application period is closed, new applications are NOT accepted until the next recruitment.

Does MFMD have a ride-along program?

The Ride-Along/Observer program has been permanently discontinued. This policy update was made to support the safety and well-being of our personnel and facilities, and to protect the (HIPAA) privacy of the patients we care for.

Can I apply to be a firefighter if I have a criminal conviction?

Integrity is highly valued, and it is essential that you be honest and truthful. During the application process, you will also be asked questions related to criminal and traffic violation convictions. The information disclosed in these sections will not necessarily bar you from further consideration. Other factors will be considered such as the nature of the conviction(s), job relatedness, and business necessity.

How can I prepare for the Firefighter Recruit interview?

We are now utilizing what is known as a communicative interview. This type of interview will allow us to have more of a conversation with you. You should expect to answer follow up questions based on your response to the original question. 

 

How do I prepare for the Intern Orientation?

The mandatory Intern Orientation is intended for the candidate to get to know us as an organization. It is also utilized as an assessment tool for us to learn more about you. It is not necessary for you to have firefighting knowledge or experience. You will start the day with physical training*. Following physical training you will be split into groups and asked to perform a variety of tasks and activities. You will be evaluated in the following areas: 

  • Teamwork
  • Execution of instructions
  • Communication skills
  • Work ethic

*Candidates are highly encouraged to prepare themselves for activity in warm weather.
