Outage Tips

City Electric Outage Map

  • Updates: Check the City of Mesa’s Facebook or Twitter for updates on the outage status.
  • Cooling stations: City cooling stations are open at these locations.
  • Outside Trips: Try and reduce or eliminate car travel. Signals/stop lights may be affected so reducing traffic also reduces potential accidents while first responders attend to emergencies.
  • Appliances and electronics: Turn off all major appliances, including your computer, air conditioner, TV, other media equipment and dishwasher. This will help the power restoration process and reduce high-priced market energy purchases during times of scarcity.
  • Refrigerator and freezer: Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep cool air inside.
  • Lights: Turn off all lights except one to indicate when power has been restored.
  • Circuit breakers: Reset circuit breakers to see if the problem is a short-circuit in your home's electrical system.
  • Doors and windows: Avoid opening doors and windows to keep cool air inside.
  • Pets: Try to keep pets confined to prevent escape through an open door or window.

Community Emergency Notification System (CENS)

The Community Emergency Notification System (CENS), also called Reverse 9-1-1, has expanded its capability and is now able to register cell and Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) phones within their database.  What this means is, if an event, incident, disaster or emergency meeting the CENS activation criteria occurs, the 9-1-1 dispatch center in the municipality will call and provide information and/or instruction to subscribers.  For more information, frequently asked questions and to register your cell or VoIP phone.

Although infrequent, the impact of these events has far reaching effects, not only on the victims and their loved ones, but on their communities and our nation as a whole. Law enforcement nationwide has responded decisively with a variety of dynamic training approaches designed to direct first responders during incidents of this nature. Many citizens have wondered what they would or should do in a similar situations. In this FBI training video, customers at a bar are caught in an active shooter event. By employing the run, hide, and fight tactics, as well as knowing the basics of rendering first aid to others, they are prepared, empowered, and able to survive the attack. This video contains dramatized scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
