Public Event.jpg The Community Outreach Team works in the community to teach fire safety and ways to be safer at home, work, and at play. We offer programs and classes on specific safety topics and you can also find us at schools and community events throughout the year to share important safety messaging.

Dispatch & Deployment

MRDC Logo The Mesa Regional Dispatcher Center (MRDC) dispatches approximately 400 calls per day and answers over 200,000 emergency and non-emergency calls per year. Dispatchers efficiently manage this volume through specialized training and protocols that determines which resources to send per call. Additionally, our Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system ensures the closest appropriate unit(s) are dispatched to an emergency.

As a regional dispatch center, the MRDC dispatches for seven local fire departments, including:

  • Mesa Fire/Medical Department
  • Gilbert Fire and Rescue
  • Superstition Fire and Medical District
  • Queen Creek Fire and Medical Department
  • Rio Verde Fire District
  • Fountain Hills Fire Department; and
  • Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation Fire Department

Emergency Management

The Office of Emergency Management (EM) designs the framework to reduce the local and regional community’s vulnerability to hazards or threats and strengthen the ability to cope with disasters. EM collaborates with local, regional, state, and national partners to achieve key responsibilities including plan design and preparation, education, response, and recovery efforts from natural disasters and acts of terrorism or other man-made disasters (threatened or actual).

CERT training provides citizens with an opportunity to learn basic emergency response skills to assist themselves, their friends and family, and/or their neighborhoods in case of an emergency.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

Medical calls represent more than 80% of the emergency calls to which we respond. The EMS Division oversees the department's medical-based services, programs, and training which directly supports our ability to provide the highest level of emergency care to our community.

Ambulance / Emergency Transportation

MFMD's Ambulance Program provides patients with the highest level of pre-hospital medical care. When needed, transport crews are dispatched along with fire crews, ensuring continuity of patient care and rapid transport to local hospitals where emergency care can continue.

Fire Prevention

The most effective way to prevent loss of life and property from fire is through prevention efforts. Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, the Fire Prevention Team supports this goal by working in the community to enforce adopted codes, educate about fire hazards, and assist businesses in implementing effective fire safety plans.

Fleet Maintenance

Fire Maintenance Fire's Fleet Maintenance provides round-the-clock preventative maintenance and repair support for our department and contract maintenance for several other area departments. This service includes bumper-to-bumper repair and preventative maintenance on all vehicle and apparatus systems including engine and transmission rebuilds. Our skilled crew and certified mechanics support more than 40 stations and 300 pieces of equipment.   

Management Services

The Management Services Division is responsible for managing the department’s budget, contracts, and grant awards. The staff works closely with all department divisions to support budgetary and financial oversight and planning.

Personnel 

Fire's Personnel Division oversees department recruitment, hiring and promotional processes which directly support the growth and development of our workforce. The team is also responsible for department employee administration and management including records management, employee relations, policy oversight, and performance reviews.

Wellness 

The Wellness office supports the health, safety, and wellbeing of our workforce through directed programs and education. Emergency fire and medical response is physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding. Wellness oversees the process to medically certify the health and fitness of members throughout their career in all sworn positions; manages health and fitness programs and equipment; and oversees programs for industrial injuries and exposures.  

Planning & Research

The Planning & Research Division helps managers make data-informed decisions and manage performance.  The division manages MFMD’s accreditation and strategic plan, develops and monitors performance measures, develops analytical tools, conducts research and data analysis, and answers specific questions using data.

Resource & Facilities Management

Fire Warehouse.jpg The Resource & Facilities Management division provides the necessary supplies, equipment, and services to support fire stations and staff including:

  • Warehouse management

  • Station and building maintenance coordination

  • Large-scale department purchasing and accounts payable

  • Program management for uniforms and firefighting personal protective equipment.   

Technical Services

Fire's Technical Services division is responsible for the procurement, implementation and management of the department's technology. This includes: 

  • Desktop, laptop, tablet, cell phone, and mobile computer terminals (MCTs) in all offices, stations, vehicles and apparatus   
  • Fire Station Alerting
  • IT Systems and Security
  • Mapping - Including pre-plans, computer aided dispatch (CAD) maps, and GIS-based maps   
  • Records Retention
  • Electronic Patient Care Reporting (ePCR) support and program management

  • Emerging public safety technologies review, beta testing, and evaluation

Training & Special Operations

Fire Training 

The Training Division serves the vital role of educating our members on suppression-based skills. This includes facilitating regional recruit academies to instruct new firefighters; delivering ongoing education to our members to support the skilled and safe delivery of our services; and facilitating specialized training for members of Special Operations Teams, both locally and regionally.    

Special Operations 

Special Teams MFMD Special Operations Teams respond to emergency incidents that require specialized training and resources. Members of these teams have additional specific training and certifications in their disciplines to help mitigate these types of unique incidents.

Special Teams include Hazardous Materials (Hazmat), Technical Rescue (TRT), Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF), Bike Team for special events, and the Wildland Team. Our Hazmat and TRT teams train and respond in a regional system within the valley and have also been requested for statewide events. The Bike Team assists at large scale community events including Spring Training and the Mesa Marathon.  Our Wildland Team is deployed when needed to assist Arizona State Forestry and the United States Forest Service on wildland fires throughout the state and region.
