What is the purpose of the facility?
Protect Public Health
Many common household items can be dangerous or difficult to manage. Utilizing the Household Hazardous Materials (HHM) facility to dispose of these items can prevent:
- hazardous contamination in your home
- fires in solid waste vehicles
- illegal dumping and contamination of landfills, groundwater, stormwater, and wastewater treatment plants
The HHM facility also advances the goals of Mesa's Climate Action Plan by offering a variety of reuse and recycling options to divert waste from landfills.
Reuse and Recycle
Everything that comes through the Household Hazardous Materials facility is assessed for reuse first, recycling next, and disposal or destruction last. Fortunately, we are able to reuse or recycle most of the material we process. Here are a few examples:
- Appliances and propane tanks are repaired or refurbished for resale.
- Cooking oil is filtered and refined into new products such as animal feed or alternative fuel.
- Used oil and antifreeze is filtered and refined into new automotive care products.
- Batteries can be "full circle recycle", which means the materials found within them can be used to make new batteries.
- Light bulbs are full circle recycled. They are dismantled into raw materials, sent back into the manufacturing stream with mercury extracted, and can be used to make new light bulbs.
- Household cleaners, automotive fluids, paint (and paint-related materials), and gardening products that are still in original containers are available for reuse through the facility's Swap Shop.
- Paint is inspected for quality, filtered, and mixed into new colors for reuse through the Swap Shop.
