Fire Prevention is responsible for performing fire inspections, education and enforcement of adopted codes and ordinances, conducting fire investigations, issuing the Fire Safety Operational Permit (FSOP), conducting Records Searches, burning (pit barbecue, bonfire), and blasting. The division also investigates complaints regarding possible fire hazards in occupancies (excludes one and two family dwellings and home based businesses) and maintains fire records for occupancies in the City of Mesa.    

Fire Inspectors perform inspections of all high, medium, and low hazard occupancies (excludes one and two family dwellings and home based businesses) in Mesa to assist our community in eliminating hazards to create and/or maintain a safe environment. Occupancy type, use, and size define how Risk Classifications are established.

Fire Investigators conduct fire investigations to determine the origin and cause of fires in Mesa and assist with fire investigations in other valley cities.

  • An application is required for each location 

  • FSOP Permits are required for all Mesa Occupancies

  • FSOP Permits expire at the end of the month listed on the permit

  • You will not receive a hard copy of your permit. You must print your own copy from DIMES

  • You can access your permit via the DIMES system. They are no longer mailed out.

Inspections will be conducted in accordance with National Fire Protection Association guidelines and staff resources, and generally not scheduled. If there is a specific requirement for an inspection to be conducted, such as licensing or certification, please contact Fire Prevention 480-644-2622 or email fireprevention@mesaaz.gov.

Fees Information: 

Beginning July 1, 2018, we began inspecting low risk occupancies which is based on the Arizona Administrative Code and Mesa City Code (Arizona Administrative Code Title 4, Ch. 36 Department of Fire, Building and Life Safety) which require fire inspections.  The low risk inspections are completed every third year.  Identification of fire code violations and the repair of those makes your business safer for you, employees, and the general public.
