Home MenuHonorary Street Signs
On September 8, 2022 City Council supported a community initiative for two honorary street designations:
- Martin Luther King Jr. Street
- Calle Cesar Chavez
Similar designations have been made in other cities locally and nationally to commemorate and honor historical significance, celebrate historical leaders and strengthen sense of community.
Recognition of Honorees
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist born in 1929 in Atlanta, GA. He is known as one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.
Cesar Chavez was born in Yuma, AZ in 1927. Throughout most of his 66 years, Chavez fought for civil rights and better wages and working conditions for farmworkers.
The honoring of both historical figures demonstrate that Mesa aligns with their messaging as an inclusive, accommodating community where all are welcomed and value equality.
Signage
As shown below, the honorary street signs will be fixed to exiting traffic signals and listed under the legal street name sign. The honorary signs will feature a unique sign color palette with a white background with black lettering.
