Mesa Housing Authority (MHA) is BILLING Incoming Portability requests until further notice.

If you have a voucher and would like to move to Mesa, have your current Public Housing Authority (PHA) send your paperwork to:

Mail:

Mesa Housing Authority, MS-9870
PO Box 1466
Mesa, AZ 85211-1466

Attn: HCV Portability
Fax: 480-644-2923
Email: portability@mesaaz.gov

Your current Public Housing Authority (PHA) must mail, email, or fax your portability documentation PRIOR to your arrival in Mesa. Hand-delivered documents from a current applicant or participant will NOT be accepted.

  • All incoming portability participants are subject to MHA’s Voucher Payment Standards and Occupancy Standards.
  • Criminal and sex offender background checks will be completed for all adults (18 years of age or older) in the household.
  • Anyone owing money to a PHA must have the debt resolved prior to porting into MHA’s jurisdiction. Failure to do so may delay the process.
  • If you are an applicant from another PHA, you must be income-eligible in MHA’s jurisdiction or MHA will not be able to accept your paperwork.

After we have received all required documents from your current Housing Authority, allow approximately 10 business days for staff to review your documents and make initial contact with you.

Occupancy Standards/Voucher Size Determination

  • Voucher size is determined as 2 family members per bedroom, regardless of age, gender, or generation.
  • Voucher size issued by MHA may be smaller than the voucher size issued by your current Housing Authority.
  • MHA does allow a voucher holder to locate a unit one size larger than the voucher size issued as long as it is within their approved amount of rent.

IMPORTANT: Families will not be permitted to move or exercise portability during the initial 12-month period after admission to the program with MHA. If the family owes monies to the Housing Authority, the balance must be paid in full, or the transfer will be denied. Families in violation of their family obligations will not be permitted to transfer to MHA.

Porting from Mesa Housing Authority (Port Out)

If you are currently assisted by MHA and would like to port out (move) to another jurisdiction, you must first submit a 30/60-day Notice of Intent to Vacate form, a Portability Request form with the new Housing Authority's contact information, and submit both to your Housing Specialist. The forms can be found below or outside our office.

On the Portability Request form, be sure to specify the Housing Authority that serves the area where you want to live. If two different Housing Authorities serve the same area, you may select the Housing Authority that you wish your paperwork to be sent to. MHA will select the Housing Authority upon family request.

Your Housing Specialist will contact the new Housing Authority to confirm your portability. If your portability request is approved, your Housing Specialist will contact you to sign a voucher and send your paperwork to the PHA you have selected.

  • IMPORTANT REMINDER! After you have ported out, no further changes will be processed. If you have a change to make, you must cancel the process to move and then process the change first or complete it with the agency you have decided to port out to.
  • If you owe any money to MHA, you will NOT be allowed to port out until the debt is paid in full.
