If you are wondering what rules of the road apply for the pedestrian hybrid beacon on Alma School Road at 7th Street, wonder no more. Here are some simple rules you must follow as a driver on Alma School Road when the pedestrian hybrid beacon is activated, and what you must do as a driver on 7th Street.

DRIVING ON ALMA SCHOOL ROADPedestrian Hybrid Beacon

Every driver on Alma School Road is required to follow each and every light – not just the driver of the first car in line.

1. Flashing yellow. Slow down and be prepared to stop. The flashing yellow lights come on as soon as someone pushes the button.
2. Solid yellow. Prepare to stop now.
3. Solid red. STOP! Remain stopped as long as the solid red light is on.
4. Flashing red. STOP! LOOK! Proceed with caution only if the crosswalk and intersection are clear. Every driver must STOP first, then LOOK and proceed with caution when clear. No driver should drive through the crosswalk during the flashing red without stopping at the stop bar, even if there is no pedestrian.
5. Dark. Proceed with caution.

DRIVING ON 7th STREET

The beacon does not control traffic on 7th Street. Traffic on 7th Street is still controlled by a STOP sign and drivers must follow Arizona State laws pertaining to STOP signs.

After stopping for the STOP sign, Arizona State Law (ARS 28-773) says that drivers may proceed with caution yielding to vehicles that are within the intersection or are approaching so closely as to constitute an immediate hazard. 7th Street drivers should not take cues from either the pedestrian count down timer or beacon displays to decide on whether or not to enter the intersection. 7th Street drivers must yield to Alma School Road traffic at all times.

Arizona State Law (ARS 28-792) says that drivers shall yield to pedestrians crossing the road within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is on the half of the roadway on which the vehicle is traveling or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the road as to be in danger.
