A Sense of Community
The Adopt-A-Street program provides citizens, groups, churches, businesses and other volunteer organizations opportunities to show pride in their community by working to beautify and maintain unimproved street segments in Mesa by picking up litter.
What is required to Adopt-A-Street?
• An individual willing to be the group representative to organize and supervise clean-up activities whose duties include:
• Scheduling clean-up dates in advance with the Transportation Staff Coordinator
• Picking up/dropping off supplies at the Transportation Department office
• Notifying Transportation Staff Coordinator of clean-up activity completion & trash pile location
• Approximately 20 volunteers to pick up both sides of a one-mile street segment
• A bi-annual commitment to clean the street segment
• Completing scheduled clean-up activities
Who can participate in Adopt-a-Street?
Businesses, churches, school groups, clubs, families and other organizations can adopt a qualifying street segment in Mesa. The average size of a group required to adopt a street is 20 individuals per mile segment. Due to safety precautions, children under the age of twelve are not able to participate as volunteers in this program.
What types of duties can you expect when adopting a Mesa street?
• Picking up trash and litter
• Placing all bags of trash in a single location for disposal
• Reporting vandalism, unsafe conditions and/or necessary repairs to the Transportation Department or via the Mesa CityLink mobile app
Is it free to Adopt-a-Street?
Yes, it is free to adopt a street; however, time commitments are required to complete clean-up activities. Groups are required to complete at least two clean-up activities per year.
What supplies are necessary for a street clean up?
The Transportation Department will provide safety literature, safety vests and litterbags. The Transportation Department will also coordinate the disposal of the trash pile through the City’s Solid Waste Department.
Groups are required to provide transportation to and from the work site, beverages and a first-aid kit for volunteers. Volunteers are required to wear closed toe shoes and long pants; We also recommend groups bring gloves and grabber sticks.
Is there any recognition for participating in the Adopt-A-Street Program?
Yes, the City will install two street signs, one per direction of travel, identifying the group and section of roadway adopted. Sings are placed upon the group completing two required cleanup activities in one year.
